Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the UEFA Champions League Player of the Week, presented by Santander.
The Juventus forward’s remarkable hat-trick on Tuesday saw the Old Lady become only the fourth home team in UCL history to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit.
Ronaldo sent two stunning headers past Jan Oblak before coolly converting a penalty to send Diego Simeone’s men packing and take his direct goal involvements to 77 in 77 UEFA Champions League knockout appearances (63 goals, 14 assists).
It was a week of fine individual performances in Europe’s premier club competition, with Sadio Mane's double as Liverpool saw off Bayern 3-1 in Munich and Leroy Sane’s brilliant display for Manchester City in their 7-0 destruction of Schalke also receiving nominations.
Lionel Messi – with whom Ronaldo drew level on a competition-best eight hat-tricks – was also in the running for the award after grabbing two goals and two assists in a 5-1 demolition of Lyon, but even he couldn’t topple Ronaldo’s virtuoso display in Turin.
