Real Madrid made their worst ever start to a Champions League encounter when they faced Atletico Madrid on Wednesday in the semi-final second leg.

Coming into the game with a 3-0 advantage from the first encounter, in which Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed a hat-trick, it had been assumed that Zinedine Zidane’s men would enjoy a relatively comfortable passage to the final.
However, the hosts had a very different idea. Starting the game in a bullish manner, they raced into the lead thanks to a Saul header and, with 16 minutes on the clock, they had pulled to within a goal thanks to Antoine Griezmann’s penalty.
It means that Real have endured their poorest ever start to a game in the Champions League, with their previous worst coming in 2004, when they found themselves a similar margin down against Roma.
On that occasion, however, they came roaring back to win 4-2 thanks to a double from Raul and goals from Luis Figo and Roberto Carlos.
