'I'm not a national hero, Ronaldo is' - Portuguese Eurovision winner pays tribute to Real Madrid star

Eurovision winner Salvador Sobral has claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo is Portugal's hero despite receiving national acclaim after leading the country to their first ever victory in the song contest.

Portugal followed up their European Championship triumph last summer with another win, but on a different stage, as Sobral's 'Amar Pelos Dios' finished top of the leaderboard at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest.

The country became the first in 12 years to hold both titles simultaneously, after Greece achieved the feat in 2004 and 2005.

Sobral was given a rousing reception on his return to Portugal, with hundreds of fans waiting at the airport to welcome him home. However, despite his historic victory, the 27-year-old was quick to downplay his new celebrity status.

"I do not feel like a national hero, that's for Ronaldo," Sobral told reporters, hailing the nation's Euro 2016 winning captain.

Ronaldo equals top scorer record

Last summer's success in France was also the first time Portugal had won the European Championship, with Ronaldo netting three goals en route to the final.

The Real Madrid attacker was forced off injured at Stade de France, but helped inspire his team-mates from the sidelines as Eder's extra-time goal sealed victory.
