Fantasy Football: Griezmann, Silva and other Champions League super sub options

Last week's article was all about the best available XI for the Goal Champions League game. Now, as in most fantasy articles, some of the calls were terrific like Angel Di Maria (two goals) and Robert Lewandowski (goal and an assist) while others were disappointing duds like Lionel Messi and Ousmane Dembele who both earned just two points.

Although, to be fair, Messi and Dembele did both score in their domestic leagues at the weekend. While that does not particularly help you in this format, the ability to swap out disappointing players during a match week, for ones that have yet to play, certainly does. Below are three super sub options that you should consider adding to your team this week.

Antoine Griezmann: Forward, Atletico Madrid - Price: £8.2m, owned by 13.66% of managers.

The France international is an easy downshift option from Messi after his disappointing performance against PSG. Griezmann currently sits top five in both goals (9) and assists (6) in La Liga and has contributed towards more goals than any other Atletico Madrid player. Bayer Leverkusen will likely struggle in this matchup as they are very young at the back (avg. of 22 years old) and currently have a bottom 10 defence in the Bundesliga.

Andre Silva: Midfielder, Porto - Price £6.5m, owned by 7.5% of managers.

Silva is a very intriguing fantasy midfielder mostly because, well, he just isn’t a midfielder. The young Portuguese international has played 27 matches in all competitions this season for Porto and 26 of them have been as a striker. His scoring record has been terrific and he currently sits top five in goals both domestically (13) and the Champions League (4). Juventus are admittedly a tremendous defence, but if Porto find a way through it will almost certainly be via Andre Silva.

Thomas Lemar: Midfielder, Monaco - Price £6.3m, owned by 1.7% of managers,

He was listed in last week’s XI but bears further analysis. Lemar and Bernardo Silva have revitalised this Monaco team and are both excellent fantasy values at £6.3m and £6.4m respectively. Specifically, Lemar is top five in both goals and assists among Ligue 1 midfielders and, with his superb pace, should cause constant issues for any of Manchester City’s ageing wingbacks. Monaco have an incredible attack (26 more goals than second placed PSG) and Manchester City have a profoundly average defence (7th in the Premier League), so don’t be surprised if there are plenty of goals in this match.
