Ex-Sutton keeper Shaw offered 'pie tester' role by supermarket

Ex-Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw was forced to resign from his post as assistant manager at the Northern League side on Tuesday but he already has a new role lined up – the Morrisons chain of supermarkets want him to become an official ‘pie tester’.

I’d join Arsenal for six Cornish pasties, jokes Shaw

The 23-stone shot-stopper courted controversy on Monday when he was spotted eating a pie on the bench during the club’s FA Cup tie against Arsenal.

After he confirmed he knew about a bookmaker offering odds on that occurrence, it emerged that both the FA and Gambling Commission would launch an investigation into his conduct, prompting the 46-year-old to resign from the non-league outfit.

Nevertheless, his penchant for pastry has him well suited to a potential new job at Morrisons.

“We’re always looking for the best talent to taste our pies and make sure they hit the back of the net,” chief pie buyer Tessa Callaghan told the Independent

“Wayne’s performance last night sets him apart as one of the country’s most famous pie connoisseurs.

“We were really impressed by his commitment to pie eating, and we understand that a good pie is the best way to warm up for any occasion, even if it is the biggest night of your football career."

Sutton lost their match against Arsenal 2-0, but their performance won wide acclaim before it was overshadowed by their former goalkeeper’s antics, which were described as a “very genuine mistake” by manager Paul Doswell.
