After that, he played a crucial role in Wrexham gaining promotion to League One as he contributed 13 assists and four goals to the cause in 44 appearances across all competitions.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After a successful campaign with the Red Dragons, the midfielder is considering returning to the international arena. He recently hinted <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/wrexham-star-james-mcclean-shock-ireland-return-incredible-season-for-ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney-s-side/blt941ddb3f69d32de5#csd0801a78ce9a797c" target="_blank">he could make a U-turn on his decision</a> just months after announcing his retirement.

Speaking on RTE, the player said, "If that call comes I’ll have a better answer in my mind. A little bit. At the time I didn’t want it to take away from the occasion. Look, I don’t want to sound spoiled. I had my family there. Most people don’t get to sign off on their terms. But I had between November and March to think. And I think: ‘did I take the easy way out because I got to sign off on my terms?’ But while you’re still playing, you’re always thinking that you can still contribute. Maybe I’ve done that too soon. But until that call comes… I’ll know then. I haven’t come so far."

WHAT JAMES MCCLEAN SAID

The 35-year-old will be back in action for Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's side next month as the Welsh club are set to <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/wrexham-pre-season-2024-tour-fixtures-results-tickets-watch/blt377345a968e89594" target="_blank">travel to the US for pre-season</a>.
