USMNT's Gio Reyna struggles to make most of opportunity in Borussia Dortmund XI as BVB defeats St. Pauli 2-0

<p>Borussia Dortmund and U.S. international Gio Reyna defeated FC St. Pauli 2-0 in the German Bundesliga on Saturday, with a pair of second half goals leading BVB to victory.</p><p>Reyna was handed his second-straight start for the <em>Black and Yellow</em> for the first time this season, but struggled to leave a lasting impact and was removed from the match in the 74th minute as a result.</p><p>His showing helped BVB to three points, but he himself struggled to influence the match, with just 42 touches on the ball and 20 completed passes. On-loan Chelsea attacker Carney Chukwuemeka replaced him.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Reyna has struggled for regular minutes over the past two seasons, while minor injuries have also impacted his play. During the second half of the 2023-24 season, he was sent on loan to Premier League side Nottingham Forest, but he made just 10 appearances for the club.</p><p>In the 2024-25 season, across all competitions, he has made 19 appearances while scoring two goals and recording one assist.</p>

<p>Fellow U.S. international James Sands was sent on loan to FC St. Pauli in January from MLS side NYCFC, but suffered a<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/usmnt-midfielder-james-sands-has-leg-operation-out-indefinitely-after-injury-in-st-pauli-s-bundesliga-fixture-with-freiburg/blt846097132bb79249" target="_self"> season-ending injury in February.</a></p>
