Serie A top scorers 2024-25: Mateo Retegui wins Capocannoniere race

Every title-winning side needs a top-tier finisher—someone who can shoulder the pressure and turn half-chances into goals. Last season, that role belonged to Lautaro Martínez, whose 24-goal haul in Serie A propelled Inter to the Scudetto with ease, as they left AC Milan trailing 19 points behind. Dusan Vlahović of Juventus gave chase, but even he couldn’t keep up—finishing eight goals short of the Argentine hitman.

This time around, the Capocannoniere crown belongs to Mateo Retegui, and what a breakout campaign it’s been. Despite already wearing the Azzurri shirt, this was just Retegui’s sophomore season in Italy after spending most of his career back home in Argentina.

His debut season at Genoa saw him find the net just seven times in 29 appearances, with injuries hampering his rhythm. But this year, he’s caught fire—writing his name into the history books as only the second Atalanta player to top the Serie A scoring charts, following in Filippo Inzaghi’s footsteps from 1996-97.
