However, Brentford hit back just three minutes later to ensure the hosts picked up a point from the Premier League encounter.

Saturday's match was yet another disappointing performance from the Red Devils that leaves them with little chance of securing a top-four finish. United now sit 11 points behind Aston Villa and and eight adrift of Tottenham in fifth. Onana was clearly disappointed afterwards, telling the club's website: "I feel sad because we are Manchester United, so it doesn't matter who you play. Everywhere we go, we have to win. We gave away this game in the end. We did a fantastic job defending – it was not our best game – but the most important thing was to win. So, yeah, it's difficult."

A poor night for Manchester United was compounded by injuries to defenders <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/double-blow-man-utd-raphael-varane-victor-lindelof-injury-brentford/blt1426cdcf0ea39888" target="_blank">Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof</a> who were both forced off at the Gtech Community Stadium. The Red Devils will aim to bounce back on Thursday when they head to Chelsea in the Premier League.
