NWSL & Liga MX Femenil clubs set to do battle in new Summer Cup

The two leagues <a href="https://www.nwslsoccer.com/news/national-womens-soccer-league-and-liga-mx-femenil-announce-nwsl-x-liga-mx-femenil-summer-cup" target="_blank">revealed a historic partnership on Wednesday afternoon</a>, revealing an extensive summer tournament that will pit some of women's soccer's best sides against each other. The first round of the competition will feature five groups, with one Liga MX Femenil side in four of them - and two in the fifth. Semifinals will take place in August, while the final is slated for two months later.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In a release, NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman expressed her excitement about the competition: "Today’s announcement marks a historic milestone for women’s soccer in North America and another significant step in the continued elevation of our global game. We’re excited to partner with LIGA MX Femenil to create additional competitive opportunities for our athletes, unlock new rivalries, tap into our collective fanbases and continue our shared mission of raising the value, visibility and global standard of our sport."

WHAT THE NWSL SAID

Liga MX Femenil Director Mariana Gutierrez echoed her sentiment: "The alliance we are announcing today is a great achievement for women's football in our region and around the world - two great women's professional football leagues coming together to advance the sport in our area, expand and grow the industry, build a new sporting identity and rivalry, strengthen partnerships beyond the pitch, inspire more people to join the movement, build community and open up new opportunities for players to have new windows of internationalization. LIGA MX Femenil is proud and privileged to work together with the NWSL. Let us celebrate that this is a historic moment for women and sport."

WHAT LIGA MX FEMENIL SAID

The cup follows nearly five years after MLS and Liga MX announced a competition of their own. <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/lionel-messi-leagues-cup-inter-miami/bltf6d2824ff3aebc76" target="_blank">Lionel Messi's Inter Miami won the 2023 edition</a>, besting Nashville in the final on penalties.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The league kicked off last weekend, with <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/alex-morgan-nwsl-challenge-cup-uswnt/blt8515d00b8cadff7a" target="_blank">San Diego Wave besting Gotham in the Challenge Cup to start the eight-month-long campaign</a>. The NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup will start on July 19.
