Newcastle player ratings vs PSG: Heroic Magpies deserved so much more as Nick Pope, Alexander Isak and others denied iconic win by late penalty

Newcastle came within touching distance of pulling off one of the greatest results in the club's European history as they put in a defensive masterclass against Paris Saint-Germain, only to concede a controversial penalty in stoppage-time that Kylian Mbappe converted to rescue a 1-1 draw for the hosts.

Knowing a defeat would see them exit the competition, the Magpies were put under early pressure as Nick Pope kept out an Mbappe flick with his legs. At the other end, though, Alexander Isak fired over from close range after a fine cross from Miguel Almiron.

The Sweden striker made amends soon after, however, as he lashed home after Gianluigi Donnarumma could only parry Almiron's weak shot from the edge of the area into his path, and Newcastle saw out the first half relatively comfortable.

Things were different after the break, though, as Pope made fine saves to deny Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola, while both players also fired off target when well placed. However, with time running out, Tino Livramento was adjudged to have handled in the box, and Mbappe made no mistake from the spot.
