<p><a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/chelsea-naomi-girma-s-world-record-transfer-san-diego-wave-signs-long-term-contract-wsl-giants/blta09ac21d08827f05#:~:text=WHAT%20HAPPENED%3F,fee%20mark%20in%20women's%20football." target="_blank">Girma joined the Blues from San Diego Wave earlier this year</a>, becoming the first player in the women's game to cost over $1m. However, fans have not been able to see her in WSL just yet <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/when-record-breaking-uswnt-star-naomi-girma-chelsea-debut-update-first-1-million-star-american-england-injury/blta5fa13695729d386#cs15920b32eea44a98" target="_blank">due to a calf injury.</a> That is now set to change as Chelsea take on Brighton and will be aiming to extend their lead at the top of the WSL table.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Girma is understood to have taken the transfer record off Racheal Kundananji, who left Real Madrid for Bay FC for just under $1m last year. Keira Walsh's move to Chelsea from Barcelona in January was also the fourth-highest fee ever at over £550k.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Aged just 24, Girma has already played 44 matches for the US women's team, scoring twice. She featured heavily at the 2023 World Cup and played every minute as <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/uswnt-emma-hayes-triple-espresso-olympic-gold-medal-winners-losers/blt88e0ec470ed41210" target="_blank">USA won Olympic gold in Paris last summer</a>.</p>
