'I'm not asking for favors, I want to earn it' - Mexico's Guillermo Ochoa eyes historic sixth World Cup selection

<p>After lifting the 2025 Gold Cup trophy with the Mexican national team, Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa has set his sights on a historic goal: becoming the first player to be selected in six FIFA World Cups. With the 2026 tournament fast approaching - and set to be hosted jointly by Mexico, the United States, and Canada - Ochoa remains motivated and hungry to compete.</p><p>Although he didn’t feature in any matches during the Gold Cup, Ochoa captained the squad and played a vital leadership role from the sidelines, mentoring younger keepers like Luis Ángel Malagón and Raúl Rangel. His presence in the locker room underlined his value beyond the pitch.</p><p>"I'm going to fight for a place in the World Cup," Ochoa stated firmly. "I'm not asking for favors - I want to earn it. It would be incredible to be part of that tournament. I train and compete every day with my club to stay at the highest level. People who have followed my career know how much I've given, and they know I’ll continue giving everything if I get the chance."</p><p></p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>At 39, Ochoa is not only aiming for another call-up but dreams of ending his career by playing in a World Cup on home soil. </p><p>“To have the opportunity to share that experience with fans in my country would be the perfect ending - the cherry on top,” he said. “This would be different from any other World Cup I’ve played. Just being part of it would be unforgettable. We’re one year away, and while the journey may feel long or short, I’m focused on making the most of each moment with the national team. Representing Mexico has been my home, and we hope to give the fans something to celebrate.”</p><p>Despite being a free agent, Ochoa remains committed to staying in top shape and open to offers - even from clubs in Liga MX - as he looks to remain in contention for a spot in the final 2026 squad.</p><p>Mexico coach Javier Aguirre has already made it clear: Ochoa will need to fight for his place like everyone else.</p>

<p>Ochoa was one of three Mexican players who didn’t see any action during the Gold Cup. Despite that, he lifted the trophy during the celebration as team captain. The goalkeeper holds the record for the most Gold Cup titles by a player, with six championships.</p>
