<p>Greenwood was sent off 50 minutes into his team's La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday for dissent. The attacker <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/mason-greenwood-red-card-f-ck-you-figueroa-vazquez-getafe-rayo-vallecano-referee-report-man-utd-loanee/blt997155d608053aea" target="_blank">allegedly said "f*ck you" to the referee</a>, but Greenwood's story about the incident differed from the official's report to the Spanish league.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Getafe have put forward an appeal, <a href="https://www.marca.com/futbol/getafe/2024/01/04/6596e517e2704e32648b45b5.html" target="_blank"><em>Marca</em></a> reports, and hope to have a response imminently as they look to find out the extent of his punishment. He is not the only Getafe player in hot water, however, as team-mates Juanmi Latasa and Damian Suarez were both sent off in the same game, while Jaime Mata was given a fifth yellow card of the season and is also suspended.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Greenwood has been one of Getafe's top performers this season since joining on loan from Manchester United, scoring three goals and setting up four more in 15 matches in La Liga. The Madrid club hope to sign him on a permanent basis, having <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/man-utd-gbp40m-offer-mason-greenwood-getafe-club-record-transfer-barcelona-real-madrid-atletico/blt434780018a679d4a" target="_blank">reportedly made a £40 million ($51m) offer</a> for him. <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/atletico-madrid-mason-greenwood-transfer-talks-beat-barcelona-race-man-utd-outcast/blt094bb59b8b3ea9b2" target="_blank">Atletico Madrid and Barcelona</a> are also said to be after him, though <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/news/man-utd-mason-greenwood-cleared-all-charges-attempted-rape-assault-case/blt667fec4a13dfc50d" target="_blank">the latter have been put off because they fear blowback</a> from fans over the charges of sexual assault and domestic violence against him which were dropped.</p>
