<p>Arsenal midfielder Caldentey won the Women's Super League Player of the Season prize at the inaugural Women's Professional Game Awards on Sunday, beating team-mate Alessia Russo and Chelsea pair Aggie Beever-Jones and Sandy Baltimore to the silverware. WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Caldentey signed for Arsenal last year and has enjoyed a stellar first season with the Gunners. The 29-year-old contributed nine goals and five assists in the WSL and also helped them reach the Women's Champions League final, where she will face former club Barcelona.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>While Russo fell short for this particular prize, she was recently named <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gh/lists/mohamed-salah-ties-thierry-henry-record-liverpool--fwa-mens-footballer-third-time-arsenals-alessia-russo-womens-prize/blt2046e691d92ee859#csbba456e148a28138" target="_blank">the FWA Women's Footballer of the Year for 2024-25</a>. The England striker also shared the WSL Golden Boot with Manchester City's Khedija Shaw as both players registered 12 goals.</p>

<p>Arsenal wrapped up second place in the WSL with Saturday's 4-3 victory over Manchester United and have just under two weeks to prepare for the Champions League final, which is set to take place at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon.</p>
