The Red Devils have been linked with a number of names this summer as they look to sign a new centre-back following their defensive troubles last season and the<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-in/lists/raphael-varane-confirms-man-utd-exit-video-reveals-what-he-thinks-about-sir-jim-ratcliffe-ineos-disastrous-2023-24-season/blt754aaa235558d94e" target="_blank"> departure of Raphael Varane from Old Trafford</a>. They are <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/man-utd-bargain-price-transfer-matthijs-de-ligt-bayern-munich-deal/blt5e14c04baf19915c" target="_blank">reportedly very close to finalising a move for Bayern's De Ligt</a>, although former United striker Teddy Sheringham does not believe he is the right man for the Premier League club.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Speaking to <a href="https://pokersites.ltd/" target="_blank">Poker Sites</a>, Sheringham said: “I don’t know if Matthijs de Ligt would be a good addition to the United defence."I think United need some experience in their back line, ideally someone with Premier League experience. He’s obviously a very good player and we all remember him from his time at Ajax, but I don’t think he should be the number one priority at the moment for the club."

WHAT SHERINGHAM SAID

De Ligt was one of the major players to come out of Erik ten Hag's tenure with Ajax. In the famous 2018/19 season for the Eredivisie side, De Ligt captained Ajax to a domestic double and almost reached the Champions League final before losing in the semi-final to Tottenham Hotspur in heart-breaking fashion.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Things haven't exactly gone as smoothly for De Ligt as he would have hoped following his big-money move away from Ajax. However, the centre-back, currently representing the Netherlands at Euro 2024, will hope that a potential reunion with Ten Hag will allow him to fulfil the potential he once showed in Amsterdam.
