<p>Ahead of Mexico’s Gold Cup opener against the Dominican Republic at SoFi Stadium, head coach Javier<em> El Vasco</em> Aguirre expressed a heartfelt message to the Mexican fan base in the United States: he wants them to feel seen and represented by the national team on the pitch.</p><p>During pre-match press conference, Aguirre addressed the emotional connection between the players and the fans, especially those living in Los Angeles, a city with a large and deeply rooted Mexican community. Although the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) made it clear at the start of the briefing that political topics were off-limits to avoid controversy, Aguirre still touched on themes of identity and belonging.</p><p>“Since the very beginning, during the Nations League, I’ve said it - I want the fans who come to the stadium to feel like they’re watching themselves out there. We want Mexicans to feel represented. Regardless of the result or the circumstances, I want them to leave feeling proud and saying, ‘We lost, but I’m proud of these guys. They fight, they hustle, they work hard - just like me.’ I want this team to bring joy to people and for fans to feel connected to what we do on the field,” Aguirre said. </p><p></p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>On the topic of veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, Aguirre was asked about his potential starting role in the tournament. The coach didn’t reveal his decision but praised Ochoa’s long-standing dedication and recent performances.</p><p>“I don’t know yet if he’ll start, but I can tell you this - I went to Lisbon to watch him play. He had a solid performance, and despite his club struggling, he held his own,"  Aguirre affirmed. "I asked him to keep his level high, as he has for the past 25 or 30 years. He’s a seasoned pro, and he belongs here because he’s earned it. Nothing is handed out in this team  - Memo is here purely on merit.”</p>
