<p>The rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo took shape in 2008 when Ronaldo won his first Ballon d'Or as a Manchester United player, edging out a young Messi. But it wasn’t until 2009, when Ronaldo signed with Real Madrid, that the competition truly escalated.</p><p>From 2009 to 2018, the two stars faced each other regularly in El Clásico — the world’s most-watched club football fixture — and split 13 Ballon d'Or awards over the span of 15 years. Messi won four consecutively from 2009 to 2012, while Ronaldo responded with four in five years between 2013 and 2017.</p><p>Their legacies speak for themselves. Messi scored 672 goals in La Liga for Barcelona, won six European Golden Shoes, and holds countless records. Ronaldo is the all-time leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League with 140 goals and has been named UEFA's Best Player in Europe three times.
