<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/ian-maatsen-close-to-leaving-chelsea-borussia-dortmund-in-very-advanced-talks/blt9f111557db0f2158" target="_blank">Chelsea loaned Maatsen to Dortmund</a> in the January transfer window after the defender struggled for minutes in the first half of the season with the Blues. The full-back has gone on to thrive with the Bundesliga side, playing 18 times, and helping the team make it through to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Maatsen's loan move has been so successful that his father has confirmed he is hoping to make the transfer permanent. Edward Maatsen has also criticised the current Chelsea ownership regime and questioned the club's priorities. The <a href="Mykhailo Mudryk and Moises Caicedo" target="_blank">Blues have spent heavily since Boehly arrived</a>, bringing in players such as Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and Moises Caicedo, but have struggled on the pitch and currently sit down in ninth place in the Premier League table.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

He told <a href="https://www.vi.nl/nieuws/maatsen-hoopt-op-definitieve-transfer-naar-borussia-dortmund" target="_blank">Voetbal International</a>: "We are working on staying at the club [Dortmund]. The clubs have to fight it out among themselves. Ian is developing well here and things are not going well at Chelsea since they changed ownership. A lot at that club also revolves around money, which sometimes seems more important than the club's interests. We have more options besides Chelsea and Dortmund, but Dortmund has proven to be a good restart. And look which guys come from there... [Jude] Bellingham, [Erling] Haaland."

WHAT MAATSEN'S FATHER SAID

Maatsen will be hoping to help Dortmund into the Champions League final, starting on Wednesday with a semi-final first leg clash against Paris Saint-Germain. The winners of the tie will face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich at Wembley for the chance to lift the European Cup.
