Henry Martín back in training, expected to return for Club América’s Liguilla quarterfinals match in May

Club América captain Henry Martín is back in training after spending more than six weeks sidelined with tendinitis, an injury that has kept him out for most of the year. Head coach André Jardine says the striker is expected to regain match fitness in time for the Liguilla quarterfinals, scheduled for May 7 and 8.América, who finished second in the Clausura 2025, took a short break before resuming training and marked Martín’s return as a key moment. By the time the quarterfinals arrive, it will have been nearly two months since his last appearance, a March 12 match against Chivas in the Champions Cup.Though it remains to be seen how sharp he’ll be or how much he can contribute, Martín’s availability is a clear boost. With América awaiting the winner of the Monterrey vs. Pachuca Play-In match, they’ll hope to have a stronger squad in place as they chase a fourth straight league title.

WHAT HAPPENED?

América have struggled to field a full-strength squad throughout most of the Clausura 2025, resulting in some late-season struggles for the club. The team has especially felt the absence of Martín and Rodrigo Aguirre, who missed significant time due to injury. They were later joined on the injury list by Brian Rodríguez, Diego Valdés, and Jonathan Dos Santos. But the biggest scare came with Luis Ángel Malagón, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/club-america-s-andre-jardine-provides-update-on-luis-angel-malagon-s-injury-after-las-aguilas-el-tri-liga-mx/blt23a1e4b3b1cd0e72" target="_self">whose injury set off alarm bells within the club.</a>The goalkeeper suffered a sprained ankle in the final match of the regular season against Mazatlán FC, raising concerns across the Azulcrema camp. Fortunately, medical tests revealed that he will only be sidelined for 7 to 10 days, meaning he should be fit in time for the Liguilla quarterfinals.

"Some players need time, others need training—like Henry Martín, who will be back in training this week. He needs at least 10 days, and he'll have even more than that (18), so this break came at a perfect time for us," said Jardine over the weekend after América’s 5-0 win over Mazatlán FC in the season finale.

WHAT ANDRÉ JARDINE SAID

As for Martín, this has been one of the toughest seasons of his career - and arguably his worst since joining Club América in 2017. He appeared in just seven league matches, recording one goal and three assists. In the Champions Cup, he played only two games and failed to find the back of the net.
