Gareth Southgate axes two more England players from his Euro 2024 squad after sending James Maddison home

The Liverpool duo were included in England's 33-man provisional squad for Euro 2024 but won't make the final list for the tournament. According to <a href="https://x.com/Matt_Law_DT/status/1798615817476870361" target="_blank">Matt Law of theDaily Telegraph</a>, both Jones and Quansah have been informed of Gareth Southgate's decision ahead of England's final friendly against Iceland.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Earlier this week, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/gareth-southgate-axes-james-maddison-england-squad-euro-2024/blt262e2c11158c3abd" target="_blank">Southgate also released Tottenham Hotspur's James Maddison from the squad</a>. The manager must still cut four more players before the trip to Germany for the Euros, with the competition only allowing a travelling squad of 26 players for each team. <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-ae/lists/jack-grealish-missing-england-euro-2024-gareth-southgate-update-man-city/bltbf04e04905a36f56" target="_blank">Manchester City star Jack Grealish</a> has also been tipped to be left out.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Normally, Southgate would have had to release 10 players from his 33-man squad, however, last month, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-in/lists/euro-2024-gareth-southgate-uefa-england-26-players/blt41889578f578f954" target="_blank">UEFA announced their decision to increase squad sizes from 23 to 26</a>. This change came after <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-in/lists/euro-2024-teams-uefa-increasing-squads-england-gareth-southgate-netherlands-ronald-koeman/blta6507cb99d8f75d8" target="_blank">UEFA received requests from multiple coaches and national associations</a>, to ease the demands placed on players due to fixture congestion.
