The Red Dragons had the chance to climb up to second in League Two and put clear daylight between themselves and their promotion rivals. But in-form Doncaster had other ideas on Tuesday night as Owen Bailey's strike just before half-time was enough to extend their winning run to five matches. Wrexham, though, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/wrexham-bottling-ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney-automatic-league-two-promotion-defeat-doncaster/blt266635f458f6ec4c" target="_blank">only had themselves to blame for the 1-0 loss</a>, with their only shot on target from 15 attempts coming in the final minute of the match.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After another profligate outing, Parkinson bemoaned his side's finishing, as he told Wrexham's <a href="https://youtu.be/ZdmRAHURMhk?si=qhV8HiqqFWwxSM" target="_blank">YouTube channel</a>: "We had chances to make the keeper work and we didn’t take them and that is very frustrating because results went for us yesterday. There was a chance tonight to put a gap between ourselves and the chasing pack.”

WHAT PARKINSON SAID

The defeat dealt a blow to Wrexham's chances of automatic promotion, especially considering their <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/paul-mullin-double-wrexham-mansfield-town-top-of-the-table-ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney/bltf5e06177021fd93f" target="_blank">victory over league leaders Mansfield</a> last time out and the <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney-wrexham-rivals-mk-dons-thrashed-stockport-significant-gap-automatic-places/blt34a018318c4b45c4" target="_blank">results of the chasing pack</a> around them. Crewe, MK Dons and Barrow all dropped points on Easter Monday, serving up a perfect opportunity for Wrexham to mount even an unlikely title charge. However, they looked bereft of ideas and certainly lacking in attacking quality on Tuesday night, and Parkinson will need a reaction from his side if they are to avoid bottling what at one point looked a near certain chance at back-to-back promotions.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

That promotion charge continues at the weekend when Wrexham travel to 23rd-placed Colchester on Saturday. The Red Dragons currently hold a two point gap over MK Dons in the play-off places in fourth while boasting a game in hand.
