FIFA President Gianni Infantino told to reconsider US as host nation for World Cup due to concerns over President Trump's border policies

<p>Human Rights Watch has said it has "grave concerns" about the country's ability to hold the tournament as Trump tightens border control and has sent a letter to Infantino asking him how he intends to deal with it.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p><a href="https://www.politico.eu/article/donald-trump-fifa-world-cup-2026-gianni-infantino-us-canada-mexico/" target="_blank">Politico </a>report that FIFA anticipates as many as 6.5 million people could attend the tournament next summer, in a competition that also features games held in Canada and Mexico, while 3.7 million are also due at this summer's Club World Cup. </p>

<p>Human Rights Watch director of global initiatives Minky Worden said in a letter to FIFA: "FIFA must establish clear benchmarks and timelines for US immigration policy changes needed to ensure respect for the rights of players, fans, and other participants in the World Cup. What actions does FIFA plan to take in the event any players, fans or journalists are subject to discrimination, wrongful interrogation or arbitrary arrest?"</p>

WHAT HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH SAID

<p>FIFA's own human rights legislation pledges "to promote the protection of human rights", with the group also asking how it intends to continue that work in the US.</p>
