The fears of political interference come due to Manchester City's backing by the United Arab Emirates who have a key relationship with the United Kingdom government. The eight-time Premier League champions are majority-owned by Sheikh Mansour, a member of Abu Dhabi's ruling family and the UAE's vice-president and deputy prime minister. According to the <a href="https://www.thetimes.com/article/2f4c32e2-9fda-4334-8cc3-8341c36177e0?shareToken=2291d8044074b8042a376c1df1c7623c" target="_blank">The Times</a>, Manchester City's rivals believe that the UK government could intervene in the proceedings regarding the charges, as they believe standing by may damage the country's trading relationship with the UAE.

THE EXPLANATION

The UK government's interest in footballing matters is nothing new as they also intervened in 2020 when a minister contacted the Premier League’s chairman over its initial refusal to allow the Saudi-backed Public Investment Fund (PIF) takeover of Newcastle United. In internal correspondence, government officials said there was an “immediate risk” to the UK’s relationship with Saudi Arabia if the Newcastle takeover did not succeed.
