<p>Maddison has been in <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/tottenham-player-ratings-vs-fulham-player-ratings-james-maddison/bltfbc13bd1127ca163" target="_blank">excellent form for Ange Postecoglou's side this season</a>, registering three goals and five assists in 11 appearances since joining from relegated Leicester in the summer. His flying start to the campaign earned him a call up for England's upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers, but on Friday Spurs announced he was pulling out of contention. </p>

WHAT HAPPENED? 

<p>Spurs explained Maddison's upcoming absence in a club statement posted on social media, which read: "We can confirm that James Maddison has been withdrawn from the England squad due to an ankle injury. The midfielder will not feature in the Three Lions' UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, and will remain at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the Club's medical staff."</p>

WHY HAS MADDISON WITHDRAWN FROM ENGLAND SQUAD?

<p>Maddison was forced off with the injury during Tottenham's <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/tottenham-chelsea-winners-losers-ange-postecoglou/blt2510f14292535208" target="_blank">chaotic 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on Monday</a>, in a game that also saw Micky van de Ven pull up with a hamstring problem. In addition, Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero were sent off, leaving Postecoglou with a string of absences to deal with over the coming weeks. </p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Maddison is set to miss Spurs' final game before the international break against Wolves on Saturday. Postecoglou will be hopeful that he is back fit when his side entertains Aston Villa on November 26. </p>
