WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Van de Beek joined United ahead of the 2020-21 season but he never managed to nail down a starting spot at Old Trafford. Apart from his first term, in which he played 19 Premier League games, the Dutchman was limited to single-figure league appearances each campaign. He leaves the club having played 62 times; just 23 of them were starts.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Van de Beek has signed a contract with Girona until 2028 and will hope to rediscover the spark that saw him play a key role in Ajax's run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. He has also won 19 caps for Netherlands, but was overlooked for their Euro 2024 squad.</p>
