<p>De Gea is enjoying an excellent debut season in Italy following a year-long hiatus after leaving Manchester United in 2023. WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>After leaving United, De Gea spent a year away from football, before joining Fiorentina on a shock free transfer in 2024. <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/david-de-gea-reduces-salary-demands-agree-one-year-contract-goalkeeper-new-club/blt10302501edfe5a6a#cs2312bb512cf59978" target="_blank">The Spanish custodian took a massive pay cut</a>, earning just €2 million (£1.6m/$2m) this season.</p><p>However, it has been reported that the Viola are keen on activating the option to extend De Gea's contract for another year, and are planning on doubling his wages for the 2025-26 season.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/david-de-gea-opens-up-shock-sabbatical-away-football-man-utd-fiorentina-renewal-decision/blt0d9e9ecf64327213#cs1b5453fb840a9345" target="_blank">In an interview with La Repubblica last month</a>, the 34-year-old opened up on his sabbatical from football, stating: “I just wanted to take it easy for a while after playing at the highest levels for many years. Perhaps, it was the best period of my life.</p><p>“I could finally enjoy time with my family and friends whom I had seen little in the past 15 years. I travelled between Madrid and Manchester, continuing to train my mind and body.”</p>
