WHAT HAPPENED?

<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/why-conor-gallagher-turned-down-chelsea-contract-offer-atletico-madrid-await-answer/blt67d02dd285b42ff0" target="_blank">Gallagher has rejected a two-year contract extension at Stamford Bridge</a> and the club do not believe that he will fit into Enzo Maresca's possession-based system. His contract expires in 2025 and the Blues appear determined to receive a fee for the player, rather than allowing him to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gallagher has been a key player for Chelsea and has clocked 95 appearances for the club, but there is a very real possibility that he will be sold. While he has yet to enter talks with Atletico, there is also reported interest from the <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/conor-gallagher-tottenham-atletico-madrid-aston-villa-chelsea-seek-gbp50m-transfer/blt453e5afdb8efe5cf" target="_blank">Blues' bitter rivals Tottenham</a>.
