James is said to have been targeted on social media in the wake of her team's 4-1 WSL defeat in the London derby. The 22-year-old was involved in a controversial moment during the game as she <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/chelsea-lauren-james-stamps-on-arsenal-lia-walti-shocking-lionesses-world-cup-escapes-with-just-yellow-card/bltda2b45175920c636" target="_blank">escaped a red card appearing to stamp on Lia Walti</a>.

A <a href="https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/article/club-statement-on-lauren-james" target="_blank">statement</a> from Chelsea read: "Chelsea Football Club condemns the online abuse directed towards Lauren James following Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Arsenal. The club stands strongly against any form of abuse and discriminatory behaviour. Discrimination has no place at Chelsea Football Club or in any of our communities. We will take action against any individual that we can identify. We stand with you, Lauren."

WHAT CHELSEA SAID

James has been a vital figure for reigning WSL champions Chelsea and was named the league's <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/lionesses-star-lauren-james-named-wsl-player-of-the-month-after-scoring-five-goals-for-chelsea/bltc3ce12495c46a6a4" target="_blank">Player of the Month for November</a>. She is the joint-second top scorer in the division with six goals from eight matches, leaving her one behind Brighton and Norway forward Elisabeth Terland.
