Buy-back clause revealed: How much Man Utd will have to pay for Alvaro Fernandez return from Benfica amid rival transfer interest

<p>The 21-year-old Spanish full-back left United this January to join Benfica on a short-term loan deal. However, in the summer, the Portuguese giants decided to permanently sign the player. They managed to secure the deal for a meagre £5million (€5.9m) transfer fee.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Last week <em>O Jogo</em> reported that European giants like <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/man-utd-transfer-mistake-real-madrid-barcelona-chasing-young-defender-red-devils-sold-cheap/blt0a3646d53cf1b105#csfc1613376caeeab0" target="_blank">Barcelona and Real Madrid have reportedly shown interest in the youngster</a> who has appeared in nine matches across all competitions from Benfica. The report also claimed that the Red Devils included a buy-back clause in his contract they could exercise to bring him back to Old Trafford.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Per <a href="https://www.record.pt/" target="_blank">Record</a>, Benfica included a €50 million (£41.8m) release clause in the player's contract but under the buy-back clause, the Premier League giants could re-sign for a much lesser value at €20m (£16.7m). The Manchester club would, however, wait for some more time to assess the player's progress before deciding to trigger the clause.</p>
