Arsenal fans hit by alcohol ban in Milan ahead of Champions League tie with Inter as city looks to clamp down on troublemakers

<p>Milan has gone dry ahead of Wednesday evening's Champions League tie, according to the <a href="https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1971599/Arsenal-alcohol-ban-Champions-League-Inter-Milan" target="_blank">Express</a>. Alcohol sales will be restricted in some of the city’s busiest areas, including the Centro tourist hub, which will be alcohol-free from 8am to 8pm. Booze isn't being sold in various surrounding areas for the entirety of Wednesday.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Prefect Claudio Sgaraglia announced the ban on the Italian Government website. Takeaway venues have also been affected - they are unable to sell alcohol to fans in plastic or glass cups. </p><p>The Italian Ministero dell' Interno said in a statement: "The ban [...] established to ensure the safety of the event and prevent possible disturbances of public order due to alcohol abuse."</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Arsenal supporters experienced a similar situation when they travelled to Bergamo in September for their goalless draw with Atalanta. Fans were prevented from consuming alcohol in several areas, although designated drinking spots were set up in the city and controlled by local police. No such solution was offered by Milan.</p>
